Located on the west coast, Danish Leather provides re-upholstery services for the Finn Juhl Chieftain Chair in the United States. Using period-correct leather types, our upholstery work replicates the techniques and materials used on the original chairs. Great attention is given to ensure that the execution of the workmanship maintains the integrity of these pieces as sculptural works of art.

In addition to Chieftain chairs produced by Niels Vodder, Ivan Schlechter/PP Mobler, and Baker Furniture, Danish Leather also does leather upholstery work on other Finn Juhl pieces, as well as pieces by other Danish designers that are known to be difficult to upholster correctly, such as the “Elizabeth” and “Seal” chairs by Ib Kofod Larsen.

Upholstery quotes depend on the degree of restoration required to the leather and padding, and the type and amount of padding used for the piece, be it horsehair, coir, or foam.

Finn Juhl Chieftain Chair produced by the shop of master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder in the mid to late 1950's. Newly upholstered in black leather.

Many of these four button models are marked with the Illums Bolighus retail tag, and it may be that these versions with four buttons were an exclusive to the Illums Bolighus store in Copenhagen, which so many American tourists frequented.

Another view of the front of the teak framed Finn Juhl Chieftain Chair made by Niels Vodder and upholstered in black by Danish Leather. This chair was originally purchased in Denmark by Geraldine and Morris Wasserman, who owned it until 2017. It was originally upholstered in black leather when it was new, and this is a restoration of how it originally appeared.
